In my previous job I was able to travel to work by bus. I always considered myself lucky being able to catch it from the end of my street and have it drop me off right outside the office twenty five minutes later. Time spent on the bus was a great way to read books, magazines, articles etc enabling me to keep up to date with all the latest news.
When I started my current job, catching the bus to work was sadly no longer an option. I had to travel by car and I really missed the ‘reading time’ (and the occasional ‘power nap’!). Fortunately I managed to find an answer to the first problem, but sleeping whilst driving is still a bit tricky!
Around this time I discovered the world of the audio podcast. I’m not quite sure how it all started, but I managed to discover a podcast called .Net Rocks. I think there was a mention of it on the MSDN website. By listening to this show I discovered that there’s a whole community out there that are all dedicated to improving the software development experience for developers and users alike. Currently my other favourite podcasts are Hanselminutes, Herding Code and Boagworld. All of these are well worth checking out.
Starting from a single podcast .Net Rocks, I soon found myself introduced to lots other great sources of information, such as blogs, videos, websites, user groups and more the traditional sources of knowledge such as conferences and courses. If you know where to look there’s a ton of great information out there. I’ll be looking more at these in future posts…
